All dresses and pairs of shorts were sewn by Sharyn.
Sharyn, thank you so much for sewing all these dresses and pairs of shorts and please extend my heartfelt thanks to your mum, her friend Betty and to your sisters. Thank you for your unwavering support of making a difference in this world through dresses and shorts.

Thank You from Mt Hagen PNG

Sometime end of May I sent a special parcel to Mt Hagen PNG for the boys of the BFO Orphanage after learning that they were in need of new pairs of pants. This morning I received an email from Dave of orphanlist with this picture attached to it. A picture that paints a thousand words, a picture that speaks for itself, a picture of happy boys of the orphanage in their Sunday’s best. Isnt that amazing knowing that these boys now own at least one new pair of pants each.
Thank you to the group of friends who made this possible, for putting more happy faces in this world. Much appreciated.

New Community on the List

The way things are going and I feel so excited about it, I think I will need more and more dresses.  I just want everyone to know that Dress A Girl Australia is very happy to support the orphans and desperately needy children being taken cared of by the Bushikori Christian Centre near Mbale in Eastern Uganda. Starting from today, these children will be included in the dress allocations and I hope to send my first parcel in September.

To Liane Foord of the Australian Support Committee , I will try my very best to make sure that the children in your area of responsibility gets to own at least one dress for each of them deserves to own one. Thank you for getting in touch with me.

'Make it' or 'Break it' in 2012

Shall we 'make it' or 'break it'? This will be the theme for Dress A Girl Australia's last dresses and pairs of shorts drive for the year. The most awaited and exciting event.....the Christmas drive.

808 vs 1500
147 vs 500

These are the numbers as of today. And as of this very minute while am writing this article exactly 161 days, 12 hours, 38 minutes and 55 seconds away from the last day of the year 2012. And I can see 'persistence' and 'determination' will be the keywords to guide us along the way if I have to meet the red figures. (I think I can see tough times with my sewing machine in the next few months :-) ).

More details will be made available as the start date comes near so watch for it!!

Feedback on Vietnam parcel

Good Morning everyone! A bit early for everyone I guess. Today is my Dad's birthday and I need to go for an early trip to the supermarket for a planned family picnic by his graveyard. Hopefully it will be a good weather for a picnic...cold but no rain!

Anyway, I have not received any feedback yet from the parcel I sent to Vietnam last month but from the Australia Post tracking service it looks like it has been delivered.
If I get the chance today, I may send a friendly greeting to Sister Julienne!

And before I forget, a very happy birthday to the most compassionate and kindest person I have ever known in my entire life, my Dad! Rest in Peace Daddy! We all miss you!

Personal Quote of the Day

Friday as usual is pretty much boring at work and the day seems too long for me especially that all I keep on thinking about is when my watch is going to show 4pm so I can get ready to go home. Lately I have been leaving 15 minutes earlier than usual due to winter time. My train ride to the station where I leave my car takes about 30 minutes and by the time I get off the train and head to where my car is waiting it has become quite dark.

To keep myself awake in the afternoon I had to keep my brain busy so I started thinking and I came up with this personal quote which I want to share with everyone -

"As one person I cannot change the world...but i think i can change the world of one person with one small dress.....one person...one small dress ...one at a time!"

And imagine if there were a thousand of us doing the same thing, that's a thousand people whose world we are changing. That is only a handful considering how many people there are on this place we call the 'earth' but that is how a difference is made...in small numbers at a time. Isnt that amazing?

So come and join us in this journey of making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate children around the world. Come and join us in making our dream of a world where every little girl owned at least one dress a reality. Dress A Girl Around the World - Dress A Girl Australia needs you.

Recommended Size Measurements

I am posting again this recommended size measurements in response to several enquiries received the past few days.
Please make sure that the pillowcases and/or fabrics you will be using are not thin or the flimsy type but not too thick as well. Bear in mind that some of these dresses are sometimes handcarried by volunteers and I do not want them to be burdened with the extra weight they will be carrying with them nor do I want them to pay for the excess kilos. The cost for excess kilos is very expensive and if they have to pay they may not want to handcarry anymore next time.  Also a dress that is too thick when folded could be the equivalent of three dresses that have the normal and very good quality of fabric. So please understand and please use these guidelines when making dresses. Thank you for your understanding and kind consideration.

Donation Acknowledgements FY2012 #76 - Dresses from Linda Smyth

Donation #76 are 25 dresses from Linda Smyth. Aside from making dresses, Linda has been busy spreading the word about Dress A Girl Around the World and has been donating bundles of fabrics collected from her friends. Here are the 25 dresses -
Thank you Linda for these lovely dresses and your unwavering support of Dress A Girl Australia. It is much appreciated. Thank you.

If you want to join Linda and me in this campaign of making dresses for the less fortunate girls around the world, please help spread the word! For more details, please send an email to dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com. Thanks!

These dresses were sewn during their Sewing Bee #3 last June 30 and donated to Dress A Girl Australia for the less fortunate children around the world. These 35 dresses are in addition to the 7 dresses from Cassie Ashley(Donation #74) and 14 pairs of shorts from Loris Pullen(Donation #73).

Here are the dresses from Parcel #1 which had 20 dresses from Loris Pullen(9x), Margaret Adair(10x) and Deborah Parish(1x) -
and the dresses from Parcel #2 which had 15 dresses from Margaret Doecke(2x) Veronica Martin(1x) Delilah Balmer(2x) and Deborah Parish(10x).
A total of  42 dresses and 14 pairs of shorts in one sewing bee. Great job ladies!

Thank you to Deborah Parish for organizing these sewing bees. This time parcels to send the dresses to me in Sydney were donated by Margaret Adair and Loris Pullen. Thank you ladies.

This sewing bee wouldnt have been made possible without the location so again our special thanks to Pastor Paul Smith for allowing these ladies to use his One light Church.

Last but not the least a big, big thank you to Brian Parish, Deborah's husband for all the hard work in making sure that these ladies have a successful sewing bee, for being there to help these ladies lift and carry their sewing tools from the car to the sewing room and back to the car when they have all completed their tasks and for unpacking and packing the furnitures. Thank you for supporting these wonderful ladies! Much appreciated. And once again, thank you ladies for your unwavering support of Dress A Girl Around the World. Thanks a whole lot!

Status of Myanmar Burma Collection

Its only the 17th of July today and the collection I have for the children of Myanmar Burma is almost filled up. Just want to share with you where the collection is at.... and I think I just want to use my new blackboard too. :-)

As mentioned last week the dresses have already been taken and the pairs of shorts needed to be attended to. With the 14 pairs I received from Loris of the Ladies of Kapundah Sewing Bee group, 11 has already been taken plus 1 from Sharyn Paull. I checked my shorts inventory last night and the second to the last parcel I received from Sharyn  actually had a size 10. So all I need are 10 more pairs : Size 8 (2); Size 10/12 (6); and Size 14/16 (2). Check out what I have written on the board with hearts in every corner. :-)
So if there is anyone out there who is thinking of sewing pairs and would like to donate for the Myanmar Burma collection, please be guided by what is written on the board above but please don't let this stop you from donating any size you want. There are still a lot of disadvantaged boys out there who needs new pair of shorts so any size will be received with open arms and much appreciated.

If you are not into sewing but you know someone who might like to make a difference in this world by sewing dresses or pairs of shorts for the disadvantaged children in many locations around the world, please help spread the word.

Please feel free to send me an email at dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com if you have any questions or wondering why I am collecting pairs of shorts for Myanmar Burma.

Donation Acknowledgements FY2012 #74 - 7 dresses from Cassie Ashley

Donation #74 are 7 dresses from Cassie Ashley 6 of them with sleeves. Woohoo!! These dresses I believe were also sewn and donated to Dress A Girl Australia as part of the Sewing Bee the Ladies of Kapundah from South Australia had last Jun 30th. Here are the dresses -
Thank you so much Cassie for the dresses. Another seven lucky disadvantaged children will be owning new dresses very soon. Thanks a lot!

These pairs have been sewn and donated to Dress A Girl Australia as part of the Sewing Bee the Ladies of Kapundah had last Jun 30th.
Thank you Loris for these pairs of shorts and thank you for your unwavering support of Dress A Girl Australia. It is very much appreciated.

Dress Distribution Map of Dress A Girl Australia

Look what I did this morning. I plotted in Google Maps where Dress A Girl Australia has sent dresses for the less fortunate children to own and wear. Only a handful of dresses per location from Australia but in the map it looks unbelievably great. We are now starting to invade the world....one small dress at a time! Woo Hoo!!
For the year 2012 only :
Uganda (154 dresses and 56 shorts)
Kenya (54 dresses and 6 shorts)
Vietnam (34 dresses)
India (30 dresses and 20 shorts)
Philippines (159 dresses and 40 kits)
Papua New Guinea (70 dresses and 18 pants)

Very soon Myanmar, Burma will have a direct line and that brings the count of locations to 8 in 7 countries. Woo Hoo!! Thanks everyone!

All pictures, if and when available, will be posted immediately on this site. Where pictures are not possible, a confirmation that the parcels have arrived will be communicated as soon as it is received.

Great news update from Dress A Girl Australia

---------------------------------------♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥-------------------------------------------------------
A 15-yr old Year 10 student from Adelaide made about 10 pillowcase dresses as a school project and will be donating to Dress A Girl Australia.
---------------------------------------♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥------------------------------------------------------- Another great accomplishment for someone as young as 15. Helping make a difference in this world by helping the less fortunate who could be of similar age to her or younger or probably older and I hope that what she has accomplished will make a great example to all the other girls her age. Would'nt that be great!!

I look forward to receiving the dresses and a picture of her with the dresses she made. Great job!!

A new collection for Myanmar Burma

Am starting a new collection of 13 dresses and 22 pairs of shorts for the children of the Hosanna Children's Home in Myanmar, Burma. This parcel will be handcarried by a mission team from Victoria in September.

Since Burma is a very conservative country, I would have needed dresses with sleeves such as a t-shirt dress or a peasant dress and it did not take me that long to find a donor. My heartfelt thanks goes to Frances Cornish who generously offered to make the 13 dresses. She actually already had 6 dresses made and has happily agreed to make 7 more. Thank you Frances! Thank you for helping 13 girls in Myanmar Burma own one pretty dress each. Much appreciated.

Now as to the pairs of shorts, I will need to check my shorts inventory if I have anything that will meet the requirements for the 22 boys. If I can remember it right, I probably would have a few that is between the sizes of 3 to 8 but I dont believe I would have sizes between 10 to 16. (I think I need to start looking for a pattern for bigger sizes)

Thought I'd share with you what I would be needing for the pairs of shorts below in case there is anyone out there who would like to help make some and donate to Dress A Girl Australia-
Between the sizes of 6 to 8 I would  need 6 pairs
Between the sizes of 10 to 12 I would need 8 pairs
and for sizes between 14 to 16 I would be needing 5 pairs.

I actually have lots of pre-cuts (and I mean lots of it!) for sizes between 6 to 8 since this is the size of the pattern I have so I think I will be making these sizes. It is only mid-July so I still have about 6 weeks to make them and am sure I will be able to find the time within these 6 weeks.

If you want to join me on this campaign of making dresses and pairs of shorts for the disadvantaged children around the world, what better way to start by sewing pairs of shorts for the children of Myanmar Burma. If this is the kind of volunteer work you want to do to make a difference in this world even with just one pair of shorts, please feel free to contact me at dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com. Would love to hear from anyone. Would love your help to spread the word around. Thanks in advance!

Feedback from parcels sent to CDO Phils and Uganda

I received an email today from Ana dela Fuente of Zonta International CDO II Chapter which I inadvertently deleted tonight thinking it was something else that yesterday she received the parcel that I sent to her about a week ago. This is great news that it only took a week for the parcel to get there as sometimes it takes 2-3 weeks.

Also, I got an email from Robert Luwalira of Home Sweet Home Orphanage, Masaka, Uganda that he got a call from their district's postal services letting him know that a parcel has arrived for him from Australia. If this is indeed the parcel that I sent then this is really good news as Australia Post told me that it will take between 6-8 weeks for parcels to arrive in Uganda. I've been counting the weeks since I posted  parcels to different locations and for Uganda this is only week 5. Am keeping my fingers crossed that what is waiting for him at their local post office is the one that I sent.

My New Chalkboard

I have a new chalkboard which I got from heyboom which she no longer needs. It is now hanging in my wall right in front of where I usually do my computing work for Dress A Girl Australia.
I intend to use this as a reminder of where my parcels are going and when, which parcels have arrived, number of dresses received from donors and a whole lot more I hope they would all fit on this chalkboard as it only measures about 12" x 12". LOL!

What I need now is a chalk so I can start using it.

Feedback from PNG - Parcel of pants sent in May

Every now and then you will be reading 'feedback' articles on this site to make sure that everyone is informed and fully aware with what is happening with Dress A Girl Around the World - Dress A Girl Australia's distribution. Here are a couple of feedbacks I received from Dave of Orphanlist when I asked whether the parcel of pants I sent last May to Papua New Guinea has been received without any problems - (I had to remove the addresses to avoid spams)

1. On the 8th of June I enquired about the parcel sent in May to make sure it got to its destination without any problems and here is his reply -

Donation Acknowledgements FY2012 #72 - Bundles and bundles of fabrics from Lynda Smyth

Lynda's done it again with donation #72. Inside the sack which looked like Santa's sack which she left at my place last Sunday were bundles and bundles of fabrics she collected from friends. Some bundles are good fabrics to make into pairs of shorts for the boys.
Here they are -
Also in the same sack were lots of fabric flowers she made for me to use as embellishments. What a kind gesture. While taking pictures of the fabric flowers I was also thinking that they would make good adornment for headbands. I can actually think of a lot of things that could be done with these flowers knowing that Christmas is just around the corner. Here are the fabric flowers -
Thank you Lynda for the fabric flower embellishments, the bundles and bundles of fabrics and for dropping them off at my place. Much appreciated.

If you all are wondering why I am receiving lots of fabric donations and embellishments, these are for the disadvantaged children around the world. Dress A Girl Australia wishes for every girl around the world to own a pretty dress. And what if that dress were made by me or by you or by anyone. If you think this is the cause you have been looking for all your life, then please join us on this campaign. For more information, please send an email to dressagirlaustralia@gmail.com.

Donation Acknowledgements FY2012 #71 - From the Wright Family of Tasmania

The word is spreading. This time from Lindisfarne Tasmania is Donation #71. Bundles of fabrics from the Wright Family.
Imagine how many dresses can be made from these four bundles of fabrics and can you imagine the number of disadvantaged girls who will own at least one dress each out of these bundles.

To the Wright family, thank you very much!! Please drop by my blog once in a while in case there will be updates available regarding your fabric bundles. Thank you.

Donation Acknowledgements FY2012 #70 - Another 6 Dresses from Sharyn Paull

Donation #70 from Sharyn Paull saved me from sewing the last 3 dresses for Papua New Guinea. I was finalizing my allocation when I realized I needed 3 more peasant dresses or any dress with sleeves to round up the number of dresses to 70. I decided to go to the Mall to have a haircut at the same time check if I had any parcels to pickup. I did have 2 parcels. When I opened one of them what a big surprise! Three of the dresses inside the parcel were peasant dresses which brought my total allocation for PNG to 70!! And look at what the number of this particular donation is. It is donation #70. haha! Whatever that means.

Here are the dresses from Sharyn that made my day!
Sharyn, thank you so much for the dresses. Was such a great timing. Now I can close my PNG parcel. Thank you so much for your unwavering support. It is much appreciated.

Papua New Guinea Parcel

This was supposed to be a news for last week but had been busy with lots of personal errands one of them was taking my car and my sister's car to the shop for maintenance. It actually took us three days to finish this errand. First we had to drop off my car, then went back the following day to pick it up and leave her car, then drove her the following day to pick up her car. Time flies so fast when you need it.

My news is that due to important commitments and limited number of vacation days available from work I have decided to delay my trip to Mount Hagen, Papua New Guinea to later this year. I will be writing a letter to Aunty Rosa of the Bible Fellowship(Orphan) Outreach to let her know and have also advised Dave Scheier of Orphanlist of my cancellation.

But the world hasnt ended for Dress A Girl Australia, Dave who actually comes from the US is visiting the orphanage in early August so I will be packing the dresses very soon to send to PNG to arrive in time for his visit. Expect my hands to be very busy quickly rolling up dresses again in the evening from work as I hope to send it this weekend. And I think I need to sit down and make another 7 t-shirt dresses to round it up to 70 dresses.
