Donation Acknowledgements FY2012 #110 - Another parcel from Liz Lynzaat

Isn't it so amazing and so wonderful to know that there are a lot of us - craftivists - who are so willing and so wanting to make a difference in this world even with just one small dress? So full of kindness and generosity by helping especially the less fortunate children around the world to own at least one decent dress for each child deserves to own at least one. And please note not just dresses but we also are catching up with pairs of shorts for the boys.

Number 110 on the list is the third parcel from Liz Lynzaat. A collection of 1 Size 2 dress and 6 Size 6 dresses.
How can I ever get tired of doing what am doing when I get so much support from the sewing community. Liz, thank you so much for the dresses. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. It is very much appreciated.

I actually enjoyed looking at all the dresses especially the ones which were patched from different fabrics. They were so cute. Prudence, thank you so much for the dresses. Much appreciated.

By the way, Prudence has actually been blogging about her sewing adventures and about several of the dresses she made for Dress A Girl (Around the World) Australia. If you have nothing to do, check out her adventures here.

Dresses from donated fabrics FY12 #5 - From Heyboom shop

Well, I did it again last night. I thought it was high time that I start making dresses from donated fabrics so this time are 3 dresses from HeyBoom Shop.
Still have several to go from the mess below but starting to make them is a good sign. I also thought that if I start making them it will help clear a little section of the messy room I have. :-)
What I am doing is a first-in fabric donation first-out dress in my sewing schedule so for those who have donated fabrics lately, it will take a while for your dresses to be completed but they will all be done. The materials donated will be a big help in meeting my goal this year and perhaps in the new year.

Thank you HeyBoom shop!!

Wishful Thinking

Last night while watching TV I was thinking maybe I should sew while watching TV. You see sometimes I am reading while watching TV so why not sew. I have this wish of being able to sew at least one dress and one pair of shorts everyday after work. It should not take long perhaps 2 hours max is what I need to accomplish it and I usually watch two hours of TV every night. And if I start now by the end of the year I would have made at least 100 dresses and 100 pairs of shorts.

So I started last night and the best I could do was one pair of shorts. After that I felt sleepy. Tonight I tried again and the same thing happened. I think my brain was too tired to think of how to insert an elastic inside the casing as I have been doing a lot of thinking at work the past few days. I only manage to make another pair. Well at least I have made 2 pairs. Let us see what is going to happen tomorrow night. Here are the 2 pairs I was able to make -

I would be using these two pairs to match dresses donated for charity auction. So whoever bids and wins, will be able to donate at least one dress from the person who donated the dress she bid for and  I match it with one pair of shorts. And finally, I no longer have this fabric material. LOL! It has all been made into or at least 10 pairs of shorts.

My Magic Slates have arrived for my Christmas Bags

I have been looking for this item for such a long time and finally found it two weeks ago from a shop in the UK that sells fundraising items and at a price I simply can not ignore.  144 pcs in one box and just the right size (12.5cms x 9cms) I wanted for Dress A Girl Australia's Christmas Bag. It all had the tickmarks needed to convince me to purchase the items. Not too heavy, not too small and not too pricey. In fact it is very light and cost about 37 Australian cents each including postage. Unfortunately something went wrong with the mailing I only received 71 pcs today and have sent my complain for the missing 73. Hopefully I will get them in another week but at least half of it has arrived.
Here is the magic slate which I used to play with when we were small. A perfect fit for my Christmas Bag
And about three weeks ago in one of my shopping spree, I found these activity books. There were 4 in a pack and each pack cost $2.20 making each book at 55 cents each.
I now have 2 items to put inside the Christmas Bag and I think I need to sell more lavender packs to buy more items. :-)

How I save so much time in taking pictures

I just realized I still have about 5 parcels to go which I really need to finish so I can clear up the area am using temporarily to stock the parcels. Anyway, my friend said to me today that I must be spending hours just taking pictures of all the dresses. Well, not really I told her. I can actually take pictures of 50 dresses in about 20 minutes and happy with the results. She thinks it was impossible so I sent her this picture. I started doing this trick when I started to get more and more dresses.

I would line up all the dresses on the floor with just enough space to allow me to get a shot of each individual dress. The more dresses I got, the more dresses I have on the floor sometimes I end up with dresses in the formal area. Once I have them all arranged, I start to walk from one dress to the next to get a shot. When this is done, I download the images to my computer and make sure that I have all the pictures I need. Sometimes I dont count the dresses when I arranged them. The download tells me how many shots I have taken so I try to compare this by counting the number of dresses on the floor. I do this before I start rolling each dress by size and put them in their designated plastic bags. The next time I see the dresses is when I start sorting them to pack in a box. The only bad side to this process is that nobody can go to the areas where the dresses are until I have finished storing them. :-) My friend's reaction was 'OMG'! :-)

I think it is time to open another parcel. :-)

Have I lost a parcel?

Thinking out loud tonight, of the 4 parcels I sent last June, I think one parcel is still unaccounted for. The parcel to Kenya hasnt arrived yet and this week is the 12th week since it left Sydney. And of the 4 parcels, it is only the Kenya parcel where I paid extra for insurance. I remember it well when the guy at the counter asked me if I wanted it insured and I said no because I already filled up a form but when he was about to tell me how much the postage would be I suddenly changed my mind and told him to calculate including insurance.

Am off from work this coming Friday so this will be my first task of the day. To go to the post office and enquire about it.

Dresses on display at a Boutique Op Shop in Katoomba

She wants to help raise funds for postage and so this thoughtful lady Monica Osvald decided to make a couple of dresses to sell. She spoke to the lady-in-charge of the Steven Walter Children's Cancer Foundation which is a boutique op shop in Katoomba where she goes to and sometimes gets some of her sewing materials. The op shop happily agreed to put her two dresses on display at the counter for anyone to see and purchase and even wrote something about the cause of dressing girls around the world to make it more attractive to prospective buyers.

Here are the two dresses on display at the Steven Walter Children's Cancer Foundation Boutique Op shop which is located at 142 Katoomba Street, Katoomba (Uniting Church Hall). The op shop is open from Monday to Friday (9-5) and Saturday (10-2)

If you have any friends and/or relatives living around the Katoomba area who might be interested or looking for a dress for someone, please let them know about these 2 dresses on display in the op shop.

Thank you to Monica for the dresses and for thinking about this idea and thank you to the Children's cancer foundation op shop in Katoomba for allowing her to display these 2 pretty dresses. Thank you for your kindness and thank you to everyone who find it in their hearts to support this cause. It is much appreciated.

Thank You Wrapped in Fabric!!

My very special and heartfelt thank you to Sandy Bugg of Wrapped in Fabric for sponsoring the cost of sending the parcel I sent last July to Mt Hagen Papua New Guinea. Yes, last July!! What kept me busy Part 2

Yesterday I wrote about what tasks I needed to do during the day. Well, as expected the task of cleaning never happened but sewing did. LOL! I thought I needed to start making the dresses and/or pairs of shorts for auction. I wanted to match a dress or pair of shorts for every item that was donated for auction. Each auction item comes with a matching dress or a pair of shorts to be donated to Dress A Girl and whoever wins the bid will have her name as the donor of the matching item. So instead of just donating one item, two items will be donated by the winning bidder.

When I started Dress A Girl Australia last year I was able to collect quite a lot of pillowcases. Whenever I saw a sale sign I would go and get some. Well, its time for some of those pillowcases to be used so I made 5 dresses today. I also was able to make 2 pairs of shorts.
If you want to know which donated item to be auctioned is going to be matched with any of these 5 dresses and 2 pairs of shorts, then be ready to join the auction event sometime late October or early November. You may like something and bid for it. More details will be announced soon.

Today's Diary - Saturday morning

For a change today I will be writing about what I will be doing and what I have accomplished since I started the day at 6:30am. I have listed all the tasks I think I need to do and let me see which tasks ends up without a tick at the end of the day. These are the tasks I have listed down : (1) vote, (2) post office, (3) grocery shop, (4) Bunnings, (5) fabric shop, (6) dollar shops, (7) clean, (8) tax and (9) more donation acknowledgements.

I left home early at 8am to vote. Parking was easy and there was still no queue. From voting I went straight to the post office to pick up parcels. Had to wait outside for about 15 minutes since the office was still close. Went to the car to leave the parcels and went back inside the mall to go to Coles to buy some grocery items. Still early so there were less people queuing at the counters. I stopped by my favourite dollar shop to check if they had replenished their stock of pencil kits which they had although this time the pencil case was different but they had the basics which I needed like a pencil, a sharpener, an eraser and a ruler. I am starting to collect them for my Dress A Girl Australia Christmas bags. I then drove straight to Bunnings to get a refund of the stop ends I bought two weeks ago which were small for the dowels I used in my wallhangings. I could not get a refund for the items when I got the correct sizes as I had the wrong docket with me. By 10am I was back in the house and I have accomplished 5 tasks.

The parcels I picked up from the post office came from the following ladies : Deborah
Parish and ladies of Kapunda, Katherine Nott, Doris Beaty, Deborah Steed of ACT and Helen McMahon of Qld. Thank you so much ladies.

Now let me see what I can accomplished in the afternoon. I have a strong feeling I know which task is not going to get a tickmark at the end of the day. :-)

A very well deserved Principal's Award for Claudia Petrie (Donation Acknowledgement #87)

WooHoo!! Congratulations to Claudia Petrie for receiving the Principal's Award for her Creative Homework in their school where she sewed a dress for Dress A Girl Around the World. This is what Claudia wrote in her creative homework writeup -

"Dress A Girl Around the World is an organization were you send in dresses you've sewn and then they are sent to girls around the world who have no dresses. I made a dress for this organization. The places they send dresses from Australia are Kenya, Uganda, Philippines, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, India and Burma. Lots of girls in these countries have one old ripped dress. Sending them a new dress makes a big difference to them and help them feel special. I sewed a pillowcase dress on my mum's sewing machine. I found it quite easy but some hard things were threading the elastic through the dress and ironing the material. I will definitely do more sewing in the future."

Here she is sewing her dress -
and this is Claudia holding the dress she made -
This is the writeup she submitted as part of her creative homework -
and below was written on the last page by her teacher -
"This was perhaps the most amazing creative homework I've ever seen. What a beautiful, special, amazing idea. Thank you so much for sharing this idea with me and the class. You are one special girl."

Yes, Claudia, you are one special girl indeed and for thinking of making a dress for one less fortunate girl anywhere in the world as your creative homework is amazing and so inspiring that I hope girls your age and older or even younger will follow what you have done. You are a good example of someone who uses her creativity to make a difference in the life of even just one less fortunate counterpart and make this world a better place to live in. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, thank you so much for the great work and the dress. It is very much appreciated. Thank you!
